MRATC Activities and Information, Week - May 24 – 30, 2026

MRATC TRAIL WORK:

Given the fire ban, this might be a great opportunity to spend some time working to eliminate fire rings in high concentration areas.  The first one that comes to mind is between the AT and Crest/Rhododendron Gap Trail T-intersection. On Sat May 30th we will have a workday in that area with a meeting time at Massie Gap at 10am. Send a mail to mratcinfo@gmail.com if you plan to participate.

MRATC HIKES:

Friday Hike May 29th - AT Hike Glade Mountain -

Join us for this hike up Glade Mountain from the Settlers Museum.  There may be some early rhododendrons blooming on the way up the mountain.  There are some good views from the mountain westward towards Walker Mountain.  There will be three options for the hike: (1) Out and back hike to Chatfield Shelter, an easy hike of 3.8 miles in total with 660 feet elevation gain, (2) Out and back hike to Glade Mount summit, an moderate hike of 7.0 miles in total with an elevation gain of 1535 feet, or (3) Point to Point hike from the Settlers Museum to the Mount Rogers NRA Headquarters on Rt 16, a more difficult hike of 8.7 miles and an elevation gain of 2430 feet (going up Glade Mtn and then down the mountain and then up Brushy Mtg to the headquarters parking lot). Please meet at the Lowe’s/Abingdon parking area on the right (construction material side) at 9:00 AM or at the Settlers Museum parking lot around 9:35 AM.  Please bring lunch, water, appropriate rain gear if needed.  Hiking poles are recommended.   Contact hike leader Steve Mason at mratcfridayhikers@gmail.com if you plan to attend.  In your response, please specify where you will meet up with the group and which of the hike options (Shelter, Summit, or NRA Headquarters) that you wish to do.
