Partnerships
Like the other volunteer Appalachian Trail maintaining clubs from Georgia to Maine, MRATC partners with the US Forest Service, the National Park Service and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. Since a section of the AT in our area goes through a Virginia State Park (Grayson Highlands State Park), the Park is one of our partners as well.
We meet with our partners to discuss Appalachian Trail issues and make plans to address them. Issues include the need for new trail bridges, trail shelter and privy construction and maintenance, and temporary or permanent relocations of the trail to accommodate sensitive natural resources and provide the best hiking experience to trail users.
In addition to our Memorandum of Understanding with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, we have volunteer service agreements with the US Forest Service and National Park Service which protect us while performing our agreed-upon maintenance tasks on the Appalachian Trail.
