KONNAROCK CREW POTLUCK, Tue., Aug. 11 Held at Konnarock Base Camp, Flat Ridge Rd., Sugar Grove, VA. Setup: 5:30, dinner: 6:00. It’s a great opportunity to show appreciation for the Crew members who have done many work projects on our section of the trail this year.


TRAIL WORK:

 No regular group trail work on the AT has been announced yet for this week.

 

OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH SAWS:  AUGUST 8TH

Little Dry Run Trail Maintenance Day

Speedwell, VA  

Henley Hollow Trailhead Parking Lot 

9am until 3pm

Brushing, crosscut and trail rehab

Wear long pants, closed toe shoes, bring lunch, water and snacks.

SAWS will provide PPE, tools and after event drinks.

MRATC HIKES:

Friday, Aug. 7: hikers will travel north on the Appalachian Trail from Rt. 603 to the Iron Mt. Trail/VA Highlands horse trail east, to the Homestead Rd. and back to the horse camp and parking area at Fox Creek. Total hike approximately 5 miles. Bring poles if needed, rain gear, lunch and water. You may want to bring something to sit on in the event the lunch area is wet logs. We may do some amateur mushroom identification if anyone has the talent or interest.

Meet up locations are Abingdon Lowe's at 9AM or Rte. 603 Fox Creek AT parking area (past Grindstone Campground on the right) at 9:45AM.

WED. AUG. 5: SITE VISIT AND PLANNING. The Visitor Use Management Committee, composed of several club members plus staff from the ATC and Forest Service, will be visiting Thomas Knob Shelter on August 5th to discuss trail sustainability, privies, signage and possible eventual relocation of the shelter.  For those who can’t come on the 5th, or in case of bad weather, there is a second date, August 20th as well. For either, the meeting time is 10 a.m. at Massie Gap and interested club members are invited to come.

KONNAROCK CREW – upcoming project in our area to join:

Aug. 7-11

This project will complete the construction of stone steps and cribbing on the Trail, south of Comer’s Creek. The worksite is next to the tallest cascade waterfall on the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Hike to the worksite is 0.5 miles from the trailhead. The crew will stay at the Konnarock Basecamp and commute to and from the worksite each day.
